B Sc Nursing

B Sc Nursing is a four year graduate programme in nursing. It is one of the most demanded nursing professions across the globe. During the four year long programme, the students are trained to take care of the patients; nearly from all aspects including casualty treatments. Multi-specialty hospitals and super specialty hospitals seem to prefer B Sc nurses to GNM, though not wholly but slightly.

When looting at the number of job vacancies available in hospitals abroad, one can understand that most of the openings are offered to the B Sc nurses who will neatly fit themselves in any position in a hospital, from wards to the ICU/ICCU. They also have the option to become nursing tutors in nursing schools, however mainly when M.Sc candidates are insufficient to fill up the vacancies.

Eligibility

Students who have completed Plus Two (10+2) or any equivalent course with Science (PCB) & English with aggregate of 45% marks from a recognized board, and with age falling in between 17 and 35 are eligible for admission in B Sc programme in nursing. In addition, the prospective graduates shall be medically fit.

However a number of nursing institutes and colleges like CMC Vellore admit students on the basis of the student’s performance in the entrance tests. Some of the major entrance tests for admission in a B Sc nursing programme include AFMC, AtEMS, AS SO CET, MHT CET, MP PMT, ‘TNPCEE, etc.

B SC (POST BASIC) NURSING

B Sc (Post Basic) Nursing is more or less the same with B Sc Nursing, except on the fact that this graduate programme is offered to nurses who have completed GNM programme and are registered with the respective nursing councils. There are two options available for the graduates to pursue this programme. A candidate can pursue this programme either

on a full-time/regular basis or on part-time/distance basis. With this option, this course remains one of the best options for those who prefer pursuing a graduate course while working. Depending on the mode of learning i.e. distance or regular, the duration varies. The normal duration for distance B Sc (post basic) is three years and for regular B Sc (post basic) is two years. Once you complete this programme, you are eligible for higher studies in nursing and are considered equal with other B Sc (Basic) graduates.

Eligibility

Candidates should have completed the Plus Two or any equivalent course with Science as major. In addition, they should have completed General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM) programme and are to be registered with the state nursing council for getting admission in this programme.

GENERAL NURSING & MIDWIFERY (GNM)

General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM) is a diploma programme in nursing. GNM is of three and a half years and is recognised by the INC. These professionals are capable of analyzing the problems of the patients who are even at the risks and can assist the surgeons even in operation theatres. Their functional area in a hospital varies from medical wards to ICU, from operation theatres to the casualty, and other fields of healthcare.

Eligibility

Those candidates who have completed Plus Two (10+2) or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Maths are eligible to join GNM programme, the age limit for the candidates is set between 17 and 35, with exception to ANM/LHV professionals.

M SC NURSING

M Sc Nursing is the post graduate programme in nursing. It is a two year programme. Candidates who have completed B Sc nursing or post B Sc nursing course from an institute recognized by the Indian Nursing Council, with not less than 55% of marks are eligible for admission.

Basic B Sc candidates should have working experience minimum of one year, after the completion of the course. For post B Sc candidates, one year working experience prior to the course or after the course is required for admission.

After the completion of M Sc nursing, one can seek higher studies in nursing such as M Phil or PhD in Nursing. M Sc nurses are more preferred to the job title of tutors in nursing institutes.

M PHIL IN NURSING

M Phil in Nursing is a one year programme for the regular students and a two year programme for those who do it as a part time programme. The eligibility criteria for admission in M Phil in Nursing will be as per the norms of the university.

PH D IN NURSING

After completing M Phil in Nursing, one may pursue PhD in Nursing. Normally the duration to complete this doctoral level programme varies from three years to five years. The admission to this programme shall be based on the university norms.

AUXILIARY NURSE & MIDWIFE (ANM)

Auxiliary Nurse & Midwife (ANM) is a two year diploma programme in nursing; recognised by the Indian Nursing Council, the sole regulatory body of Nursing in the country governed by the Ministry of Health & Family.

After the successful completion of the course, one can find employment in hospitals and healthcare clinics. In normal circumstances, their main task is concentrated to ‘labour ward’ where they will be entrusted with the tasks of taking care of the child and mother. Options are available for them to find employment as Anganwadi workers (AWW), other community health activists and as volunteers.

Candidates who have passed 104-2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Math’s can join this programme. The candidate, by the date of admission, shall have completed 17 years of age and the age should not exceed 35 years.
