About us

Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) was established in 1980 by the Vokkaligara Sangha and is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka. The Vokkaligara Sangha decided on September 2, 1979, to start a medical college in 1980-81 and sought permission from the Registrar of Bangalore University. On November 30, 1980, the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri R Gundu Rao laid the foundation stone for KIMS and announced the grant of vacant land in Banashankari for constructing the college building and hostels.

Dr. M Basavaraju, a Professor of Physiology, was appointed as the principal on January 1, 1981, and other staff members were appointed by March 1981. Regular classes commenced on March 16, 1981, which is celebrated annually as KIMS Day. The institute celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2006, and a magnificent college building was constructed at the Banashankari Campus to mark the centenary celebrations of the Vokkaligara Sangha and the Silver Jubilee of KIMS.
